Frequently Asked Questions

If you need to show ID to complete your voter registration, whether you can show your ID on an electronic device may depend on the county where you reside and vote. While the Elections Division of the New Jersey Department of State advises that you must present a physical copy of your ID, the county boards of elections have mixed views. Please also see the federal ID requirements for first-time voters.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your mail-in ballot is missing your signature or your county Board of Elections determined that your signature does not match the signature in your voting record, local officials must send you a “cure letter” in English, Spanish and Korean within 24 hours of rejection (and in some cases by email or phone, if officials have that information on file).

Sign and date the cure form and provide one of the following:

  • New Jersey driver’s license or non-driver ID number
  • last four digits of your Social Security number

You may also provide one of the following if it has your name and address:

  • copy of a New Jersey state-accepted form of ID
  • a sample ballot
  • an official federal, state, county or municipal document
  • a utility bill
  • telephone bill
  • tax receipt
  • rent receipt

You must return the cure form to your county Board of Elections office in person or by mail, email or fax no later than 48 hours before the final certification of election results.
