September 21, 2018 - ORLANDO - Maria was registered to vote but did not have a Florida photo ID or a a certified copy of her birth certificate. Not only would this have made voting difficult, it also meant that she was unable to enroll her children in school. The cost of a FL state ID, at $31.25, was a significant burden for her. Our Florida Voter ID Coalition Coordinator, Jazlyn Gallego, advised Maria on what documents to bring to the DMV. A family member was able to go to the Puerto Rico DMV in person and obtain a certified copy of Maria's birth certificate and mail it to her. Then, Jazlyn arranged to meet Maria at an Orlando DMV office and cover the cost of her ID. This is Maria's story in her own words:
I recently moved to Orlando from another state. When I first moved, I was able to register to vote at a local grocery store with a voters registration canvasser. This is when I learned about VoteRiders and their voter ID services. I called the VoteRiders helpline that was displayed on the back of a voter ID information card and quickly got a response. They were able to answer voting questions I had like “do I have to bring my voters registration card to my polling place?” They also helped me obtain a voter ID by telling me which documents I needed to present at the DMV. With the help of VoteRiders, I was able to get a Florida state identification card. This ID will improve every aspect of my life. Thank you VoteRiders, for the help that you have given me."
