Just before his 88th birthday, Milton moved to Wisconsin from California to live with friends. He applied for a new Wisconsin ID using his valid California driver's license, but found out that the Wisconsin DMV does not consider CA IDs valid for proof of citizenship because they do not yet comply with federal "REAL ID" standards. He was told to get his birth certificate and re-apply.
The vital records office in his California county of birth finally found his birth certificate, but it contained a misspelling. His friends helped him submit legal documents to correct the error, but they finally had to involve their US Representative in order to complete the process.
Anybody who says it's easy for older people to get an ID - it's not true. It needs to change.
