Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t have the right ID to vote in Connecticut?
First-Time Voters
First time voters without an accepted ID must cast a provisional ballot if they are voting in an election with federal candidates on the ballot. Provisional ballots make sure eligible voters are not turned away from the polls.
Other Voters
All other voters can vote a regular ballot if they complete and sign a form confirming their identity (called “Signatures of Electors Who Did Not Present ID”).
If you are a registered voter but do not present an acceptable ID at the polling place, you must complete and sign a form that affirms you are the person whose name appears on the official registry checklist and includes your residential address and date of birth.
Can I use a digital or mobile ID to vote in Connecticut?
Whether you can show an acceptable ID on your electronic device depends on the type of identification you wish to show. For instance, a driver’s license, state ID, student photo ID (unless the original is only available digitally), or valid vehicle registration must be the original. You may present the original or a digital version of a utility bill, bank or credit statement, property tax statement, or vehicle insurance certificate.
If you do not present acceptable ID, in most cases, you may sign an affidavit in lieu of presenting ID.
Do you need a “REAL ID” to vote in Connecticut?
You do not need a REAL ID to vote in Connecticut.
Your driver’s license or state ID card will show a star in the upper corner if it meets REAL ID requirements under federal law.
