WABI5: Question 1 asks voters to implement Voter ID laws, change absentee voting

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Election Day is one week away. On ballots next week includes an initiative attempting to implement voter ID laws and make changes to absentee voting.

Question 1 asks: “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?”

If passed, the measure could “really fundamentally change the election system in Maine,” says Cerdiwen Cherry, legal director for nonpartisan Voter ID organization VoteRiders.
