Voter ID in Georgia

What is your plan for voting?

Voter ID rules are different based on whether you vote by absentee ballot or in person.

Voting by Absentee Ballot

Any registered Georgian can choose to vote using an absentee ballot. You don’t have to give a reason for not voting in person.

Requesting Your Ballot

You have to apply to receive an absentee ballot. If you need assistance, another person can help fill out the application.

You can request your ballot online, deliver your completed application form in person, or send it by email, mail, or fax.

Application Info

If you have a Georgia driver’s license or ID, you must put its number on your application.

If you do not have one:

1️⃣ You should mark on the application that you don’t have either number.

2️⃣ You need to include an acceptable ID when you apply.

The application has a place to attach a copy or upload a photo of your ID.

You can use one of these photo IDs if it is unexpired:

    • ID issued by the US government or any other state
    • Georgia voter ID card
    • US passport
    • Military ID issued by US or any state
    • Employee ID issued by the US, Georgia, or local government
    • Tribal ID
    • Student ID issued by public schools approved by Georgia Secretary of State

You can use one of these documents if it has your name and address:

    • Current utility bill
    • Bank statement
    • Paycheck
    • Check or other document issued by the government

You will also need to give your name, birthday, voter registration address, and the address where you want the ballot to be sent.

Returning Your Ballot

If you have a Georgia driver’s license or ID, you must write its number on your ballot’s outer envelope.

If you do not have one:

1️⃣ You should mark your ballot’s outer envelope that you don’t have either number.

2️⃣ You need to write your Social Security number’s last four digits in the space provided.

You will get a message in your ballot package if you didn’t include the correct ID with your application. If that happens, you should put a copy of any required ID in your ballot’s outer envelope.

Georgia does not allow you to return your ballot electronically.

Voting in Person

You must show a photo ID to vote in Georgia.

You can use a Georgia driver’s license even if it is expired.

These photo IDs work if they are not expired:

  • Georgia state ID
  • ID issued by the US government or any other state
  • Georgia voter ID card
  • US passport
  • Military ID issued by US or any state
  • Employee ID issued by the US, Georgia, or local government
