Voter ID in Idaho

What is your plan for voting?

Voter ID rules are different based on whether you vote by absentee ballot or in person.

Voting by Absentee Ballot

Any registered Idaho voter can choose to use an absentee ballot. You don’t have to give a reason for not voting in person.

You will need to apply to receive your absentee ballot. You do not need to include a copy of your ID with your application or when you return your completed ballot.

Idaho does not allow you to return your ballot electronically.

Voting in Person

Idaho asks you to show a photo ID when you vote in person. If you don’t an ID that works, you can still vote a regular ballot if you sign a form confirming your identity.

You can use the following photo IDs:

  • Idaho driver’s license or ID
  • US Passport
  • Photo ID issued by US government
  • Tribal ID card
  • Unexpired student ID card issued by high school or institution of higher education in Idaho (this will not be accepted beginning in January 2024)
  • License to carry a concealed weapon issued by a county sheriff in Idaho
