VoteRiders Denounces the Passage of Wisconsin’s Voter ID Constitutional Amendment, Warns of Lasting Harm to Voter Access

“Today’s vote marks a troubling setback for voting rights in Wisconsin, with voters opting to cement restrictive voter ID laws into the state constitution. Do not be fooled by misleading rhetoric: this measure will make it significantly harder to challenge or improve Wisconsin’s existing voter ID requirements, further entrenching barriers that disproportionately impact seniors, students, rural voters, and communities of color,” said Jake Spence, Wisconsin State Director for VoteRiders. “This amendment is a direct attack on voter access, and will undoubtedly make it harder for eligible Wisconsinites to participate in future elections. Wisconsin already has one of the strictest voter ID laws in the country. This amendment weakens the state’s democratic foundation by putting the votes of current and future eligible voters under systematic risk.”

VoteRiders has always been in it for the long haul, and tonight we redouble our commitment to serving all eligible voters in Wisconsin and beyond no matter the barriers. We have long faced an uphill battle in terms of raising public awareness of the far-reaching and uneven effects of voter ID laws. In the face of this setback, VoteRiders remains steadfast in its mission to provide the people of Wisconsin with the voter ID education and free assistance they need to successfully cast their ballots. This fight will continue no matter the barriers that are placed in our way, and we urge everyone to stay committed alongside us.”
